  • Wonder about mother tongue vs. fatherland? Ask a terminologist!

There are some fascinating aspects of language that cross into the practical needs of software products. One of them is the field that that the terminologists occupy. There is even an alias within Microsoft that I used to belong to for terminology issues. I say "used to" because I realized what I was interested in was conversations about and behind word choices, and the alias had reached a very practical pinnacle which mainly amounted to someone asking What's the word for ________? and having p... • Richer video uploads for SLS (Robust: Pause and Resume)

Over at SLS RemyP announced a new robust uploader If you are using Silverlight 2 Beta 1, next time you go to http://silverlight.live.com to upload a video, you will be able to enjoy the completely overhauled upload stack. • Professionalism, Programming, and Punditry and Success as a Metric

Scott Hanselman has a great article on success and the measurement of it.  Without a doubt, the best part of the post is this:   "I'm definitely not an authority figure on software development. I'll go so far as to put words in the mouth of Martin Fowler (we'll see if he comments), but from my interactions with him, I'd venture to say he wouldn't consider himself an authority either. He's a traveler on the path, as are we. He thinks, shares, asks good questions and starts i... [read more]

  • A negative review for LINQ in Action

For a change, I won't post about all the positive reviews that our LINQ book received.Today, I wanted to post about a negative review that has been published recently on Amazon.com. This review is interesting because it's completely different than the others. It gives the book a rating of 2 stars on 5.Here is the content of the review:LINQ with no actionI am disappointed with this book - it did not meet my expectations. • Professionalism, Programming, and Punditry and Success as a Metric

Jeff Atwood has one of his best posts in months that was inspired by Alastair Rankine's post "Blogging Horror" explaining why he's unsubscribed from Jeff's blog. I too, have been less compelled to read Jeff's blog lately, but he's an excellent writer and he's consistent, so I read it at least a few times a week. Kudos to Jeff for keeping up the pace and for inspiring conversation. Alastair says: "In other words, Atwood seems to be setting himself up as an authority figure on ... [read more]

  • Flickr web app with MVC preview 3 [Cont..]

In my last post, I have mentioned of creating Flickr app with Asp.net MVC. In recent update I have modified it with Asp.net MVC Preview 3. You can find a general reference about the project here. But in this post, I will say, what are the changes due to the new release and where to start especially. In previous release of ASP.net MVC you had RenderView, which lets you render your UI right from the controller and controller classes are with void return type, now with new release this is slightl... • Character Map is being quite the [Ol ]Chiki monkey

If you watched Saturday Night Live way back when, you might have remembered the Mike Myers skit involving Simon, the one who was always calling the viewer a "cheeky monkey". I was thinking about this the other day when Paul asked over in the Microsoft VOLT user's community: I added the Ol Chiki glyphs to a font (U+1C50..U+1C7F) as well as others newly assigned code points in the Unicode 5.1 standard. The glyphs are definitely present in the TTF file (I checked with TTX and Microsoft's Font Valid... • Busted!

Full story at the SMH ... If I were responsible for this, I'd not be happy for a number of reasons: If they were using Word 2007, they could have inspected the document and stripped out personally identifiable metadata and the like, before saving as a PDF (via Word) I think there is an ethical question of why this needed to be submitted anonymously. Was a certain web based document creation tool not up to the task of creating a formatting intensive document like this: Clerical err... [read more]

  • Trulia - Snapshot

Trulia launched their new home searching tool dubbed "Snapshot" as a new and unique way to search for real estate. I have to say, this site IS ABSOLUTELY SICK. For you non-Gen Xers and younger, that's a good thing. I would say it's "disgusting" but only post Gen Yers would get it. Seriously. UX people - take some notes, because you're about to get schooled on how to change the game when it comes to building an interface. First, enter a city/state. Okay, very simple. That alone is alluring - sim... [read more]
